A group of high school students, a group of college students, a group from one of our suppliers, and a home-schooled family attended our Manufacturing Day. About 30 employees acted as tour guides and on-the-floor presenters. Everyone was able to see our machines and assemblies in action and to ask questions, not only about our processes in production, but also about how we develop products in R&D and engineering. Everyone was treated to a nice lunch, where managers and engineers joined them for discussions and to answer questions, and goody bags were given out to all.

Our Manufacturing Day event was held at our corporate headquarters in San Marcos, CA. We offered our guests two sessions they could attend, morning and afternoon. We had 215 guests in attendance ranging from local schools and universities, elected officials, other businesses throughout California and community members. We kicked off our tour with a 30-minute presentation, educating them on Manufacturing Day, the history of our organization and the details of the tour. Guests were then grouped into smaller groups of 10 for a tour of our campus and manufacturing facilities.

The guests started their tour in Engineering where they learned how a mold design is developed based on the customer’s product design. While touring the shop, each machine’s importance was explained. R.D. Abbott joined us and did a presentation on different types of materials used in producing product from the molds we build. Molding machines were running in the Tech Center and the guests were able to see product being produced from the molds they saw being built.

A day full of hands-on activities began with an introduction to the forging process and its important role in the aerospace world. Weber Metals manufacturing engineers led students through the black light inspection process of a part, showing how the bright green neon glow identifies a safe part. At the environmental engineering station, students learned all about Weber’s advanced stormwater treatment system. Things got high-tech at the Programmable Logic Controller demonstration, where students were able to see how technologically advanced the forging industry has become. In the lab, quality engineers showed students metal structures under the microscope and explained their department’s integral part in the forging process. In addition, students toured the 60,000-TON press facility, which houses the largest privately invested forging press in the world.

Bishop-Wisecarver hosted two days of events for MFG Day 2019 that included 160+ high school and college students, FIRST robotics team members, local business owners and community members, and Lenny Mendonca, Chief Economic and Business Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom and Director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). All participants were able to tour three sections of the Bishop-Wisecarver facility, complete a hands-on engineering project utilizing Legos and racetracks, visit a tradeshow booth set up with information and employees available to talk about their various roles in manufacturing. Company president, Pamela Kan, gave welcoming talks and participated in tours and discussions. One high school student called the event the “Disneyland of Manufacturing” and is now talking about manufacturing as a career option.
