Solar panel designer and manufacturer Maxeon Solar Technologies announced it would establish a solar cell and panel factory in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The company expects the $1 billion project to create approximately 1,800 jobs, and construction will begin next year. Maxeon said in a press release that the 3-gigawatt site would make both TOPCon PV-silicon cell technology and the company’s shingled-cell performance solar modules. The investment will add administrative offices, panel assembly facilities, solar cell fabrication, and a warehouse. According to Maxeon CEO Bill Mulligan, the development would contribute to reshoring and expanding the domestic solar supply chain in the United States. Mulligan added that the project could generate a strong local economic impact and help the U.S. advance its clean energy agenda. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham credited state programs and the federal Inflation Reduction Act, saying that the investment would advance the state’s role in a clean energy economy and create a more robust workforce. The project is pending a successful financial close through the Department of Energy’s Title 17 Clean Energy Financing Program. Maxeon produces and sells SunPower brand solar panels in over 100 countries. Its manufacturing footprint includes facilities in Mexico, the Philippines, and Malaysia. More from Industry Trends
